This semester
Miguel Guadalupe, who sits on the Board of Trustees for La Unidad Latina

To support community programs which aid in the civic em-powerment and
educational improvement of the Latino community.

Sigma
Chapter's Participation in the Feed Brazil Program
The President of Brazil, Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva has made one of
his greatest initiatives while in office helping feed the millions of
Brazilians that suffer from malnutrition everyday. The national program
is called Fome Zero (Brasilian portuguese for Zero Hunger). For some
information on the program click here.
Hunger and
poverty is a huge problem in Brazil. For these reasons we have established
this program. Your donation, of any magnitude will be going directly
to one of the families listed on the following pages and will make a
real impact on those individuals lives.
The families
who receive our support live in rural settings without running water
and 40 percent have no electricity. The job opportunities throughout
Brazil are thin with unemployment percentages that reach the high 80
percent in this region of the country . These families on average earn
approximately $40 dollars a month while trying to
support families of eight people on average.
La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Sigma Chapter's Feed
Brazil Program is a food distribution program in a rural area
of the state of Sergepe, Brazil and at an orphanage in Salvador, Brazil.
It was established by Thiago Oliveira, an Hermano from LUL's Psi
Chapter at Dartmouth College, and Rafael Tapias, an Hermano from
Wesleyan University in October of 2003. Between the two programs there
are 122 Brazilians that La Unidad Latina sponsors. Children make up
70 percent of this population.
Goals
The
Feed Brasil program has the following as its goals:
To provide
each family with one basket of food for every month of the year that
contains necessities such as rice, beans, pasta, powder milk, etc.
To donate
perishable goods four times a year (such as fruits and fish) to the
orphanage.
To Raise
$2,500 per year. This will be enough to maintain the program's budget
for one
year.
Initiatives
2005
The Sigma Chapter Hermanos have raised $180 thru the Latin Legacy party
with Latina Promoviendo Comunidad, Lambda Pi Chi. The Psi Chapter Hermanos
will schedule a fund raiser in early May.
2004
Funds were raised through events.
The first in Salvador, Brazil that reaped enough profits to provide
the 13 families with one basket of food each, and make one donation
of perishable goods to the orphanage.
The second was hosted by Hermanos at Dartmouth. Their efforts, along
with the support and aid of their administration and local New Hampshire
businesses, made it possible to raise 960 dollars.
At Wesleyan, working along side the Black Womens Collective the Sigma
Chapter Hermanos were able to raise $640 thru our Club Fusion Party
held
at Eclectic.
The
Hermandad Program
